![]() There is a lot of debate as to whether you, as a developer, will need 32GB or more RAM. Now if you need to run Windows on your Mac the only choice is to use the Arm version of Windows 11, if you need another version of Windows you need to use an Intel-powered Mac (or a PC). ![]() ![]() With the M1 we lost Boot Camp as an option because the system is no longer on the same X86 platform as Windows. However, this isn’t as simple as it was before the introduction of the M-series chips. Luckily many essential apps do already run natively on the M1 chip, including Python, Unity and Chrome.Īnother reason to develop on the Mac is that you can run not only macOS on it, but also Windows and Linux and other operating systems by using virtualization and virtual machine software. You can check the status here: Apps Ready for M1 and we run through which apps work on M1 Macs in a separate article. If the app you need isn’t native yet, Apple includes Rosetta which translates old X86 code so it can run on Arm (there may be some lag if you are having to rely on that though). The main disadvantage is that the software you use may not be fully supported, but over the past few years, many apps have been updated for the Arm-based chips. These new Macs compared very favorably with the older Intel-powered Macs. Ever since the introduction of the M1 in November 2020 Apple’s home-made Arm-based chips have proved groundbreaking and the benchmarks impressive. There is a lot of positive to be said about Apple M-series chips which so far include the M1 and M1 Pro, Max and Ultra and the M2, M2 Pro, Max and Ultra. "His ability to write cleverly and to come up with unexpected, polysyllabic rhymes was something of a trademark, but he also had the even rarer ability to write with utmost simplicity and deep emotion." Rodgers, as a creator of melodies, ranks with Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. Hart's lyrics, facile, vernacular, dazzling, sometimes playful, sometimes melancholic, raised the standard for Broadway songwriting. Ella Fitzgerald recorded their songbook and Andrea Marcovicci based one of her cabaret acts entirely on Rodgers and Hart songs. Their songs have long been favorites of cabaret singers and jazz artists. The article also noted their "spirit of adventure." Analysis The new production had a considerably longer run than the original and was now considered a classic by critics. Critic Brooks Atkinson wrote in his review, "Although it is expertly done, how can you draw sweet water from a foul well?" When the show was revived in 1952, audiences had learned to accept darker material, thanks in large part to Rodgers' work with Oscar Hammerstein II. Many of their stage musicals from the late 1930s were made into films, including On Your Toes (1936) and Babes in Arms (1937), though rarely with their scores intact. From 1935 to Hart's death in 1943, they wrote a string of highly regarded Broadway musicals, most of which were hits. In the early 1930s they moved to Hollywood, where they created several popular songs for film, such as " Isn't It Romantic?" and " Lover", before returning to Broadway in 1935 with Billy Rose's Jumbo. They quickly became among the most popular songwriters in America, and from 1925 to 1931 had fifteen scores featured on Broadway. ![]() After writing together for several years, they produced their first successful Broadway musical, The Garrick Gaieties, in 1925, which introduced their hit song " Manhattan" and led to a series of successful musicals and films. One of their first collaborations together was at Columbia, and resulted in the 1920 Varsity Show, Fly With Me, which incidentally also involved Oscar Hammerstein II. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were introduced in 1919 while Rodgers was still in high school and Hart had already graduated from Columbia University. They worked together on 28 stage musicals and more than 500 songs from 1919 until Hart's death in 1943. "The groups we assembled for the tests consisted of several unrelated dog breeds, positioned at distant branches on the genetic 'tree' of dogs, thus our results highlight the role of functional breed selection that has possibly been aimed at those capacities in dogs that enhance attention and interest towards human behavior."ĭobos concluded the discussion with a remark regarding their future plans. "The beauty of this finding lays in the fact that we did not find any specific dog breed to be especially talented in social learning," said Pongrácz, supervisor of the research program. Independent dogs on the other hand, did not speed up their detours, even though they were also provided with the same demonstration of walking around the fence. Unlike their independently working cousins, cooperative dogs performed faster subsequent detours compared to their baseline trial. However, it turned out that when additional assistance was provided in the form of watching the helpful demonstrator, cooperative working dog breeds were in clear advantage. Upon review of the results, it turned out that the independent and cooperative breeds were equally unsuccessful in the control condition, which was not a surprising result, regarding how hard is the detour task for dogs in general. ![]() Dogs had to find the reward behind the transparent wire-mesh fence, which is a hard task, as many dogs cannot perform the required detour within one minute, which is the standard duration of a trial.ĭogs were tested in three consecutive trials, either without any further help (control group) or after witnessing Dobos as she walked around the fence, demonstrating how to make a detour, before the second and third trials. The two researchers utilized the idea of sorting dog breeds into two functional groups: those who were selected for cooperatively working with their human handlers (such as herding dogs, pointers, retrievers) and those who mainly work without constant human guidance-the independent working dogs (such as terriers, sighthounds, spitz type breeds and livestock guarding dogs).ĭobos tested nearly 100 dogs in the well-known "V-shaped fence detour" test. Péter Pongrácz, who conducted many of the pioneering social learning experiments with dogs in the last two decades, was joined by Petra Dobos, an exceptionally promising undergraduate student, whose bachelor thesis was aimed towards the ambitious goal of finding breed-related differences behind dogs' social learning skills. Now, with their new study published recently in the journal Animals, the researchers of the Department of Ethology showed that some dog breeds seem to be more honed towards human behavior than others, which helps them to improve their performance in an otherwise difficult spatial problem-solving task: to detour around an obstacle. Although dogs are well known for their excellent ability to learn from other dogs, and more importantly, from humans, this significant feature remained stubbornly independent of their breed through more than two decades of investigations. ![]() ![]() But social learning, which is the capacity for learning through observation of someone else's actions, remained an interesting exception, until now. There are of course many experiments in which ethologists found considerable breed differences. It's only natural to speculate that terriers would behave differently than Huskies, Border Collies would show different preferences than pointers, and so on. Those who are experienced with the world of ethological conferences, know all too well that if you present your work about dog behavior, the first (or second) question from the audience will be: "And did you check whether the breed of the dog had an effect on your results?"Īctually, this is not surprising as most people are familiar with the mindboggling variability of hundreds of dog breeds that differ not only in their appearance, but also in their behavior. ![]() ![]() ![]() Include any known magnitudes and directions and provide variable names for each unknown. A common strategy then is to assume all forces are tensile, then later in the solution any positive forces will be tensile forces and any negative forces will be compressive forces. An incorrect guess now though will simply lead to a negative solution later on. We will also need to guess if it will be a tensile or a compressive force. Remember that for a two force member, the force will be acting along the line between the two connection points on the member. A normal force for each two force member connected to that joint.Any external reaction or load forces that may be acting at that joint.Next you will draw a free body diagram for each connection point. Assume there is a pin or some other small amount of material at each of the connection points between the members. This analysis should not differ from the analysis of a single rigid body. Treating the entire truss structure as a rigid body, draw a free body diagram, write out the equilibrium equations, and solve for the external reacting forces acting on the truss structure. In this book, the members will be labeled with letters and the joints will be labeled with numbers. This will help you keep everything organized and consistent in later analysis. In the beginning it is usually useful to label the members and the joints in your truss. The process used in the method of joints is outlined below: The method centers on the joints or connection points between the members, and it is usually the fastest and easiest way to solve for all the unknown forces in a truss structure. The method of joints is a process used to solve for the unknown forces acting on members of a truss. Here is a second explanation on how to solve using method of joints: Keep analyzing joints until you’ve calculated the load in all members:Īnd that’s it! If you don’t specify compression or tension, you should use positive and negative to denote tension and compression, respectively. Next move to joint b because you now only have 2 unknowns now at joint b (F bc and F bg). Now solve for the reaction forces (R ax R ay R e) looking only at the external forces using the equilibrium equations for a rigid body: You start with your model:Ĭonvert the constraints into reaction forces with the appropriate labels: After solving for the reaction forces, you solve for the unknown forces at each joint until you have found the value of each member. Note: Choose a suitable scale for drawing the Maxwell diagram. The method of joints is a form of particle analysis. For each member, take example between space 1 and 5 would be the member AC and so forth. It starts by labeling the spaces between the forces and members with an example shown above reaction Ra and applied force, P labeled as space 1 and continue moving clockwise around the truss. The procedure for solving this problem could be quite tricky and requires imagination. For this case, the value of Hb is zero as it is not influenced by any horizontal forces. Yet again, evaluating the support reaction plays an important role in solving any structural problems. ![]()
